Feng Shui

A thousand-year old Chinese principle, Feng Shui helps to create harmony between the individual and the home. Have you already felt naturally at ease in a place: this is the very principle of Feng Shui

Feng Shui, the principle

From a 4,000-year old Chinese tradition, Feng Shui, meaning “wind” and “water”, combines the principles of the universe with human existence. This practice is based on optimising the circulation of Cosmic Energy (Chi) inside a space in order to live in harmony with one’s environment. When applied to the home, Feng Shui helps to improve quality of life making it more fruitful.

Today, Feng Shui has become a major fashion trend. Millions of followers around the world employ this thousand-year old eastern technique in order to act on vital energy (Chi) and, thus, positively influence their health, their emotions and their behaviour. In the home, interior design and decoration professionals increasingly use the rules of Feng Shui to define layouts, colours and decors which favour the well-being of their clients.

Feng Shui, the home

Although Feng Shui is a complex and subtle discipline, we may all start to help our home comply with its precepts by employing a few basic techniques. One of the main principles of Feng Shui consists of freeing the home of all superfluous features, which encourages the development of the energy field. Therefore, the home’s interior must be carefully cleaned and tidied.
Possible Feng Shui layouts room by room:

  • Lounge: none of the armchairs in the lounge should turn its back to the doors or the fireplace in order to help the circulation of Chi. As a place of relaxation and conviviality, the lounge should be very tidy. If your lounge is large, divide up the space with plants, however, on the other hand, avoid overfilling small rooms. Ensure that the lounge’s lighting is pleasant and adaptable to different activities (enough light for the reading corner, filtered light for more private spaces). Opt for warm colours (orange, ochre, ivory), which encourage harmony and conversation.
  • Kitchen: the kitchen is one of the house’s main rooms. Simplicity and warmth should reign here. Encourage the circulation of Chi by ensuring that your work surfaces are kept clear.
  • Bathroom: for better circulation of Chi, the bathroom should be located as far as possible from the entrance to the house. As the room devoted to the body, the bathroom should be a place where you feel comfortable. Do not hesitate to add candles which you will light when you take your bath.
  • Bedroom: the bedroom is the room where we spend the most time. Therefore, it helps to maintain physical and mental health. In order to ensure that the body repairs itself properly at nighttime, the bedroom’s atmosphere should be restful and private. Keep furniture to a minimum and opt for gentle lighting. The bed should be placed in the most harmonious corner, as far as possible from the door and the window.
  • Office: Introduce plants which act on the flow of energy, encouraging initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit.
